Course Objective:
This course explores the rich legacy of Black theatre, from its roots in African performance traditions to its impact on contemporary Broadway. Through engaging TikTok video lectures, discussions, and resources, students will gain an understanding of Black playwrights, actors, and theatre movements that have shaped the American and global theatre. The goal is to not only educate, but also inspire action and create access - whether that means attending productions, supporting Black theatre artists, or creating new work.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will:
1. Understand the historical significance of Black theatre movements and key figures, from the Harlem Renaissance to today’s Broadway and regional theatre landscape.
2. Engage with Black theatre through books, podcasts, and performances that deepen knowledge and appreciation.
3. Attend & support Black theatre productions, actively participating in the culture and ensuring its continued growth.
